Verrucano
Is this a rock – it looks like a piece of concrete?
The resemblance to concrete is striking. This stone, a Verrucano, is composed of various materials. It consists of cemented sand and gravel – similar to concrete. Geologists call this a conglomerate.
When did verrucano come into being?
The Verrucano was formed by the erosion of a mountain range that was formed long before the Alps. During heavy rainfall, rivers transported a lot of sand and debris from this mountain range and deposited it in desert-like areas on large alluvial fans.
Why is the Verrucano so red?
The red color is due to the oxidation of iron in the desert climate.
If you follow the stream upwards from the Hotel Il Fuorn, you will repeatedly encounter purple discolorations on the ground along the way. These come from Verrucano. The most striking are the Verrucano blocks at the entrance to Val Trupchun: They lie in the stream bed halfway between the Prasüras parking lot and the Varusch park hut.
